AA Football Tidbits – Week 8

Two weeks to go in the regular season. Four teams, Bozeman, Butte, Billings West and Sentinel, have established themselves as the cream of the crop, while Helena High and Helena Capital have proven they’re no pushovers. The postseason is right around the corner; read on to see what the matchups would be if the playoffs started today!

Week 8 Match-ups…

  • Senior @ CMR (Thursday)
  • GFH @ Skyview (Thursday)
  • Butte @ Big Sky
  • Glacier @ Flathead
  • Capital @ Hellgate
  • Sentinel @ Helena High
  • Belgrade @ West
  • Bye – Bozeman

Minty’s Predicted Winners…

  • Senior
  • GFH
  • Butte
  • Glacier
  • Hellgate
  • Sentinel
  • West

Last Week: 5-2, Overall: 38-12

What To Watch For…

  • Game of the Week: Sentinel @ Helena High. The Spartans don’t look to have a weakness. They have playmakers on offense and they fly to the ball on defense. Helena High has a similar pedigree, especially on defense, with different styles of runners at the halfback spot. The Bengals are 12 points away from being undefeated on the season, while Sentinel is 3 points away from being unbeaten and perhaps the number one team in the state. This promises to be a great matchup.
  • Upset Special(s)
    • Flathead – Their lone win came on the road against a very tough Helena High squad. The Braves have struggles with offensive consistency all year, but their win two weeks ago in Helena shows that they can play with even the best teams in the state. Glacier is very similar to Helena High in terms of athletes, strength, etc. On top of everything else, it’s a crosstown game; throw the records out the window!

Minty Tidbits…

  • Playoff Watch: At least for this season, the AA has switched to a divisional playoff format in which all 15 teams “make the playoffs”. If the postseason were to begin today, here’s what Round 1 would look like:
    • Butte – Bye
    • Skyview @ Sentinel
    • Belgrade @ Capital
    • GFH @ Helena High
    • Hellgate @ CMR
    • Glacier @ Senior
    • Flathead @ West
    • Big Sky @ Bozeman
  • The West has been the more dominant division in the AA conference thus far this season with a combined record of 33-24. The East, which features two winless teams, sports an overall record of 18-26.
  • Will Dissly Watch: Sad news to report here as the Bozeman High-product tore his achilles last week against the Browns. Barring a miracle, Dissly is done for the year.
