The case against punting (and in support of MSU)

Armchair coaches from all over the state had something to say about the Cats going for it on 4th and 2 from their own 35 last Saturday vs Eastern Washington. My only question for the pundits who disagreed with Ash’s decision: Did you even watch the game?

Trust the Defense?! Well I trust the Cat’s defense about as much as I would trust Tiger Woods on a weekend with my girlfriend. Here’s a better question, why not trust the offense? The Bobcats had 718 total yards. Dakota Prukop averaged 7 yards per carry, Chad Newell averaged 6.3 yards per carry and you want to punt to a team that scored 55 points?

The eye test really should be enough to debunk the pro-punt pundits, but I can’t help myself:

Jordan West averaged 24 yards per ATTEMPT! (yes, that includes, incomplete passes. Jordan had three of those).

Jabari Wilson averaged 11.1 yards per carry.

Rob Ash didn’t have his defense tackle anyone during the two weeks they had to prepare for Eastern Washington.

Out of all those stats (including West’s which led to an unheard of 313.5 passer rating) I think the last one is the most insane. Coach, how can you have D1 athletes not go full contact in two weeks of practice? Of course they are going to be rusty.

Keep going for it on 4th and short, screw the pundits. My only suggestion is you spread it out, empty the backfield and let Prukop pick up the much needed yardage.

A good coach knows his weaknesses and will maximize his strengths as a team. Keeping possession of the ball is the best way to do that if you have a great offense and inept defense.

Montana Parlay is and will always be anti-punt.
