Better Know a MT Sports Fan: Bear Tycoon

Better know a MT Sports Fan is a new feature from the Montana Mint where we ask Montanans how they started rooting for their favorite team.  Montana is unique in that not only does the state not have any pro sport teams, but neither do the states surrounding it.  This leads to some interesting combos.

This week we ask Montana Mint Editor Bear Tycoon about his favorite teams.  If you have an interesting group of favorite teams, email us your story at hello@montana-mint.com.

Denver Broncos: Not super unique to Montana.  My fandom is a result of a combination of them being or regional TV team (TV is a theme in my favorite teams), and my dad being a fan.  My dad famously made me watch my first Broncos game with him when I was three days old.  He wanted to indoctrinate me early, but also wanted to get out of raking the yard.  Despite not winning a championship since the Elway days, the team is always fun to watch.  I was a big Jake Plummer guy and I loved the Tebow year.  Added bonus that Elway lived in Missoula as a kid.

Chicago Bulls:  This one is easy.  As a kid from the 1990s, I watched the Bulls dominate the decade.  Because they were so good, they were always on NBC/TNT, etc.  I was obsessed with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen growing up. And honestly, obsessed might be an understatement.  I draped myself in red and black.  I stuck my tongue out like MJ when playing hoops. I even had “Bulls” shaved into the back of my head.  Not kidding.

Atlanta Braves:  Like so many baseball fans in Oklahoma, Wyoming, Montana, and other states without baseball teams, I fell in love with the Atlanta Braves because they were always on TBS.  My oldest sister was hilariously a huge Deion Sanders fan, so I partially followed her lead.  Terry Pendleton was my guy initially, but then embraced his replacement Chipper Jones.

Calgary Flames: I never followed hockey growing up.  I went to college on the East Coast where people were really into it.  Having no affiliation to any team, I literally looked at a map to see which team was closest to Montana.
